Your poster MUST have an extended metaphor that works to identify the victims (birds), the perpetrators (combine), those working to find solutions (Mac), and the solutions (fishing and laughter) During the presentation which you will give during the final hour, you will explain the social issue and explain and analyze the metaphor that you and your group created for your poster.

Explain how Kesey uses metaphors to characterize and ultimately criticize the social issue of patient treatment in mental health institutions.  Using specific passages from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, analyze how he uses metaphors to criticize the different problems in the hospital.  Your analysis must draw on evidence from all four parts of the novel.

Complete Cuckoo Metaphor Quotes 5/29/2012 5/30/2012
 Class: Library, Mural Room
1. Please print out your quotations from your social issue that you linked to the metaphor of "Birds," "Combine" etc. Hand these in to the sub or to me today.
2. Print out your articles and share them with those who have the same social issue, so that you all have a collection of resources and ensure there are no duplicates.

3. Find the rock star quotations that come from Cuckoo's Nest that also establish the metaphor you connected your social issue to. Again, create a bank of quotes with the following headings and matching quotations:
  • Under "Birds" put quotes that illustrate the patients as the birds;
  • Under  "Big Nurse" put quotes that show the nurse as a machine/mechanical;
  • Under  "Combine" put quotes that show the organizations, rules, or societal expectations that reinforce the negative causes of this social issue;
  • Under "Mac" and "Fishing"  put quotes that show Mac  working to change/improve this issue;
  • Under "Flying over the Nest" put quotes that show changes and corrections that come as a result of Mac.
Homework
Please have all of the above ready to go for tomorrow. You will have a timed writing and will need both sets of quotations.

Reading Preparation for Final Discussion 5/29/2012 5/30/2012
Class/Homework
Please be sure that you have the two articles that you used in your final paper.  On the front page of each article, you should have a 3-4 sentence summary of the whole article and active reading that you will use in your argument tomorrow to discuss why Blankets should or should not be taught in Literature and Society.

Please make a photo copy of this work and hand it in to me so that you have grades for these two articles on the books.
Final Exam: Video Essay 5/23/2012 5/30/2012
Use the handout from class for details about this FINAL EXAM PROJECT: a video essay about human rights.  The MAIN PART of your presentation is about how TEENAGERS can get involved in the issues you are explaining.  The easiest and MOST EFFECTIVE way to do that is to TAKE the audience to the website and SHOW US all the different things we can do in Park Ridge, Illinois, to get involved with the issues.  DEMONSTRATE where the links go on the pages and what options we have to contribute to the cause or to learn more about the issue.  Doing a competent job of guiding us around the website and showing SPECIFIC actions for us to take is a GREAT WAY to meet one of the main requirements of this assignment, but there is more to it than that.  Read the handout carefully.

This assignnment is 15% of your semester grade.
Kite 5/23/2012 5/29/2012
Build a kite that will fly for at least 30 seconds, and decorate the kite to reflect characters and themes from The Kite Runner.  Use the handout from class, which is here on this web page, to see more details and  online instructions for kite building.  DO NOT BRING THE KITE TO SCHOOL UNTIL I GIVE YOU A WEATHER REPORT AND AN EXACT DATE FOR KITE FLYING.
Researching Key Elements of a Social Issue 5/25/2012 5/29/2012
Class/Homework
1. Make sure your social issue is approved. It must be an American social issue.  If you need a list of topics, take a look at this LRC website. (Link will only work at school, so get the LRC database access codes if you want to search at home. ) You must leave here today with an approved social issue.

2. Find at least two articles on your social issue that allow you to find the following evidence that you will type up the quotations for and create a "Works Cited" at the bottom.  You will need at least one quote per topic, but more is better.

  • Under "Birds" put quotes that show the population/people that this social issue effects;
  • Under  "Big Nurse" put quotes that show the people who cause the negative outcome;
  • Under  "Combine" put quotes that show the organizations, rules, or societal expectations that reinforce the negative causes of this social issue;
  • Under "Mac" or "Fishing"  put quotes that show what specfic people or organizations are working to change/improve this issue and what are they doing;
  • Under "Flying over the Nest" put quotes that show what are the corrections or changes that can be made.
At the end of this list, put the Works Cited for all of your sources and staple them to the bottom of this sheet.

3. Finish reading Cuckoo's Nest
