Learning another language gives the learner the ability to step inside the mind and context of another culture. Whatever career goals one may have, knowing a language certainly won't hurt one’s employability. Chances are that knowing languages will open up employment opportunities that one would not have had otherwise. Research shows that knowledge of other languages boosts students' understanding of languages in general and enables students to use their native language more effectively. Studying a foreign language can also enhance one's ability to learn and function in several other areas. Even when an undergraduate or graduate institution doesn't require foreign language study, it's often recommended by those institutions. Knowing a language can't hurt an application/resume, and is highly likely to make one a more competitive candidate in the admissions process.
Ten good reasons why you should learn a foreign language:
1. To increase understanding of world
2. To improve employment potential
3. To increase English ability
4. To improve cognitive skills
5. To improve chances of admission to a university
6. To appreciate international literature, music and film
7. To make travel more feasible and enjoyable
8. To expand study abroad options
9. To increase understanding of one’s own culture
10. To make lifelong friends
