As we end one semester and begin another, we celebrate “good news” at Maine West High School.  Since the last newsletter, three seniors were recognized as 207’s Best.  They are Ashna Thomas, Community Service (November); Phoebe Kohl, Fine Arts (December); and Daniel Bohar, Improved Performance (January).  Congratulations to these seniors!  We are proud of them and their accomplishments, and we share this pride with their families and the Maine West community.

In the area of Fine Arts, seven students participated in the District 7 Illinois Music Education Association Festival, and two students, Phoebe Kohl and Ryan Spero, were selected for ILMEA All-State Choirs; they perform at the IMEA state festival in late January.  West’s Peter and the Starcatcher was also selected as one of the plays to be presented at Theatrefest in mid-January in Champaign, IL.  Congratulations to the talented students and staff who so well-represented Maine West.  In addition, Maine West Visual Arts students had work selected for inclusion in both the Elmhurst College Art Exhibition and the Illinois High School Regional Art Exhibition.

In athletics, the girls’ basketball team is having another great season and remains undefeated.  The girls are currently ranked #1 in the State and top twenty in the nation.  Our Warrior wrestlers finished second in the CSL North with a 4-1 record, which is as high a finish as we have had in a decade.  All of our winter athletes are working hard in the classroom as well as on the playing fields.

Our fundraiser for this year is Patrick Lives On, and multiple events will be held in the second semester to support the fundraiser.  On Friday, January 25, West Side (our fan section) and boys’ basketball are teaming up to support Patrick Lives On at their conference game against Deerfield.  Patrick Lives On shirts will be sold, and there will be other fundraising activities happening at the game that evening.  Come out to support our school-wide fundraiser and our boys’ basketball team!

Additional events that will support Patrick Lives On:

  • January 30 – Miracle Minute – we ask all students and staff to contribute $1 or whatever they can afford.
  • February 20 – G-Ball (one of our students’ favorite PE Games) Tournament
  • March 9 – Maine West Fun Fair for kids of all ages
  • March 11 – Maine West Broadcasting Open House/Patrick Lives On Film Festival
  • March 15 – Spring Dance Off (a new event)
  • March 22 – Philanthropy Assembly at which we celebrate our efforts
  • April 6 – Daddy Daughter Dance for girls between the ages of 3-10 and their fathers

The next Parent Meeting with the Principal will be held on Monday, February 11, 6:00-7:00 p.m. in Room H-106.

As always, the academic and physical well-being of your child is the highest priority for us at Maine West High School.  We remain committed to doing all that we can to ensure the best learning environment for each and every student.  To that end, we are profoundly grateful for your continued support and partnership in this most important endeavor.  Happy 2019!
