Maine West Assistant Principal Keynote Speaker at Latino Youth Summit

Maine West and Maine East students participated in the Latino Youth Summit at Harper College recently. Maine West Assistant Principal for Student Services Claudia Rueda-Alvarez co-founded the summit 19 years ago and this was her last year as co-chair. She served as the keynote speaker at the event where more than 500 Latinx high school students were in attendance.

The purpose of Latino Summit is to improve academic achievement among Latinx students and to encourage the pursuit of higher education. Through role models, the Summit hopes to motivate students to stay in school and to set goals beyond high school. Additionally, it hopes to increase the number of Latinx students pursuing post-secondary education.

The day included a flag ceremony, cultural dance performances, the keynote address and panel discussions for high school students to interact with professionals, college students and college representatives throughout the day.

Juanita Bassler-Perez from Harper College is the other co-founder along with Dr. Rueda-Alvarez.
