We appreciate the continued partnership of our students and families in building strong attendance habits. In August, district schools averaged 95.8% daily attendance, with 73% of students meeting the district’s 95% attendance expectation.
What Do These Numbers Mean?
These two measures look at attendance in different ways:
- 95.8% Average Daily Attendance tells us the percentage of students who were present on an average school day.
- 73% Meeting the Attendance Expectation of 95% tells us the percentage of individual students who are consistently attending at least 95% of the time.
Attendance System Exemptions
Our attendance systems include exempt absence types that do not count against students. Exemptions apply to daily extracurricular attendance expectations, social privileges and senior off-campus lunch.
Exempt codes include:
- Bereavement
- College visits
- Religious observances
- Hospitalization
- Homebound instruction
- Field trips
- Extenuating circumstances approved by the A.P. of Student Support Office
Automated Detentions Begin September 8
Beginning today, September 8, two separate automated detention systems will operate concurrently. Each system results in a detention for every fifth instance:
- Unexcused Absences & Excessive Tardies: Every fifth unexcused absence or excessive tardy of 10 minutes or more.
- 1st & 2nd Period Unexcused Tardies: Every fifth unexcused tardy to 1st and/or 2nd period. This is a new system designed to reinforce on-time arrival at the start of the school day.
The two systems are separate and do not combine instances. Counts begin September 8, continue through Semester 1, and reset at the start of Semester 2.
When an automated detention is assigned, both the student and parent/guardian will receive an email with notification and information about how to serve the detention.
Please note: Outstanding detention minutes make a student ineligible for social privileges until the detention obligation has been fulfilled.
Reporting Absences
Parents/guardians are expected to contact the school on the day of an absence. If the school is not notified by the end of the school day, the absence will be recorded as unexcused.
Once an automated detention has been assigned, the opportunity to report the absence as excused has passed. Absences will not be changed retroactively after a detention has been assigned.
