Department Information
With students and families from around the world in Maine 207 schools and with Maine 207 alumni living and working in locations around the world, the personal and career benefits of learning and understanding multiple languages and cultures is apparent. Through this process, students will better understand their own culture and increase their global awareness. A four-year sequence is recommended for optimum success in second language acquisition. Students are able to learn a number of different languages, and if they participate in Advanced Placement courses, they have the opportunity to earn college credit for those experiences.

The World Languages Department at Maine West strives to serve students academically, emotionally, and socially by placing value and validation on each student’s cultural, social and academic autonomy. We also provide pathways of support that encourage each student to:

• take risks
• increase their confidence
• use the language with authenticity
• pursue rigor
• engage in meaningful communication 

Our vision is to embrace new cultural products, practices and perspectives that will engage students in meaningful discourse that can offer a perspective on diverse life experiences and identities.

Courses offered

French:

French 1 → French 2 → French 3 → French 4

*accelerated option is available at all levels

Spanish:

Spanish 1 → Spanish 2 → Spanish 3 → Spanish 4, Dual Credit → AP Spanish Language

*accelerated option is available for levels 1 through 3

Spanish Language Arts (SLA):

SLA 1 → SLA 2 → SLA 3 → AP Spanish Language → AP Spanish Literature

Seal of Biliteracy
Maine Township High School District 207 is proud to participate in the Seal of Biliteracy program, which recognizes students who have attained a high level of proficiency in one or more languages in addition to English. This Seal of Biliteracy also carries national recognition.
