With students and families from around the world in Maine 207 schools and with Maine 207 alumni living and working in locations around the world, the personal and career benefits of learning and understanding multiple languages and cultures is apparent. Through this process, students will better understand their own culture and increase their global awareness. A four-year sequence is recommended for optimum success in second language acquisition. Students are able to learn a number of different languages, and if they participate in Advanced Placement courses, they have the opportunity to earn college credit for those experiences.
Whatever career goals one may have, knowing a language certainly won’t hurt one’s chances for employment. Chances are that knowing languages will open up employment opportunities that one would not have had otherwise. Research shows that knowledge of other languages boosts students’ understanding of languages in general and enables students to use their native language more effectively. Studying another language can also enhance one’s ability to learn and function in several other areas. Even when an undergraduate or graduate institution doesn’t require the study of another language beyond English, it is often recommended. Knowing a language cannot hurt an application/resume, and it is highly likely to make one a more competitive candidate in the admissions process.
