Maine West High School is excited to present their annual variety show, “West’s Got Talent” on Thursday, November 12th and Friday, November 13th at 7pm at the Maine West Auditorium. Tickets are $7 for students and $12 for adults and may be purchased online at http://mwfinearts.ludus.com/ . Tickets will also be sold in person at the door!
Come experience the amazing array of talents at Maine West, including guitar solos, cultural and lyrical dances, vocal acts and our very own Orchestra Pit! Director David Harmon says that students have been rehearsing since mid-September, perfecting their individual acts. “Each act is expected to attend 2-3 rehearsals to refine and polish their performance. One of the acts I’m most excited about involves a Rubix Cube challenge, where a student will attempt to solve the puzzle in under a minute!! When you add the dramatic lighting, fog and an iconic rock ballad, it’s pretty cool to watch! Vocal Director, Lauren Eakes-Loving appreciates the chance to work with students on their passion projects, “My favorite thing about working with students on “West’s Got Talent” has been coaching students one-on-one with music they are extremely passionate about! Seeing them in a context outside of their regular ensembles has also given me an opportunity to get to know them better and even meet new students!!”
One exciting aspect of this year’s lineup is the wide array of cultural acts featured on the Maine West Stage. “We want ‘West’s Got Talent’ to be an all-school event, one that features ALL of our students; not just the actors and musicians that are used to being onstage,” says Harmon. “West is an inclusive community with a rich diversity of cultures and traditions, we want to make sure our talent show reflects that.”
Indian dance group Desi Dhamaka and as well as our Mariachi Band are among several cultural performances to be featured this year. Senior Alicia Koladyil, Co-Captian of Desi Dhamaka agrees that WGT is an opportunity for West to flex on its rich diversity, “It feels amazing to feature something so culturally significant to us for most of us who grew up learning Indian dance. We are also excited to show everyone a variety of different styles with a unique twist to it as well!” When asked about how it feels to feature Mariachi music on the Maine West stage, senior Kai Casas says “Sharing my Mexican culture makes me feel proud. I want people to experience my own culture and things that are important to me. I feel like it’s important to make people familiar with other cultures to show how beautiful it is.”
West’s Got Talent is one of the most highly anticipated events of the season and is appropriate for audiences young and young at heart! With close to 30 acts, this year’s show has something for everyone!. So Join us for an entertaining evening and witness the array of amazing talent and cultures we have at West!
