Important Aspects of the Resume
- Well Organized: Ensure the layout is professional and logical.
- Clear Objective: State exactly what you are looking for.
- Readability: Keep it easy to read for busy coaches.
- Targeted: Specifically tailored to the Head Coach and program.
- Effective Communication: Enhances the bridge between all parties.
- Identification: Always include your jersey number.
Resume Categories
Organize your resume using these key sections to ensure coaches find the data they need quickly:
1. Contact & Stats
- Contact Information: Your name should be in the largest font.
- Personal Statistics: Include metrics relevant to your specific sport.
2. Academics
- Objective: Clearly define both your educational and athletic goals.
- Education: Include GPA, class rank, ACT/SAT scores, and honors courses.
- Academic Honors: List any awards or academic recognition.
3. Athletic Profile
- Targeted Sport: Clearly state your primary sport (e.g., Baseball, Swimming).
- Achievements: Detail both team successes and individual accolades.
- Other Athletics: List secondary sports to show versatility.
4. Leadership & Experience
- Leadership: Captaincies or club officer roles.
- Extracurriculars: Music, service, and volunteer work.
- Employment: Work history and responsibilities.
- References: Include your Head Coach and at least one other coach.
The Student-Athlete Cover Letter
Your cover letter is your personal introduction. Ensure it includes the following:
- Direct Address: Address the letter specifically to the Head Coach.
- Graduation Year: Identify your class year immediately.
- School Interest: Express a genuine, particular interest in that specific institution.
- Athletic Highlights: Briefly showcase your top achievements.
- Campus Visits: Identify possible dates when you plan to visit the campus.
- Enclosures: Mention that you have included your resume and highlight DVD (clearly noting your jersey number).
